The Role of the Translator: the Mediator between the Author and the Reader
Abstract
In the field of translation, there are many different views on the role of the translator. Some scholars stress faithfulness, equivalence and resemblance of spirit or form in light of the translator’s cultural attitude; some hold the view that translator serves as a servant or mirror; others believe that the translator is a betrayer or a complete creator. In this thesis, the translator is described as a mediator, who is supposed to keep the balance between the author and the reader. That is to say, the translator should consider both the original and the target readers in the process of translation. He cannot overstate the status either of the reader or of the author. The author of this thesis aims to prove the translator’s role as a mediator by illustrating the relationship between the author and the translator and the relationship between the reader and the translator. The thesis firstly introduces the previous views of the role of the translator, and then demonstrates different descriptions of images and positions of the translator in translation circles. The body of the thesis illustrates that the role of the translator should be a mediator between the source text author and the target text reader. At last, the thesis further proves the role of the translator as a mediator by means of a case study, the corresponding research into Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang.

摘 要
在翻譯界中，關于譯者角色的說法眾多。有的學者從譯者的文化態度出發，強調忠實、對等和內在精神或者形式的相似；有的認為譯者就如仆人或鏡子1樣；有的認為譯者是叛逆者或完全就是1個創造者。在這篇論文里，譯者被描述成為1個協調者，他應該控制作者和讀者之間的平衡。也就是說，譯者應該考慮原作和目標讀者兩方面。他既不能夸大讀者的作用，也不能夸大作者的地位。這篇論文的作者從作者與譯者以及讀者與譯者的相互關系中證明譯者的角色是1個協調者。論文開始介紹翻譯界以往對譯者角色的定位，然后列舉翻譯界對譯者形象和地位的不同描繪，得出譯者的角色應該是協調者，論文的主體部分證明譯者的角色應該是源語言作者與目的語讀者之間的協調者，最后以《浮生6記》為例進1步分析譯者林語堂作為1個協調者的角色。
