　　一直以來，“圣誕快樂”我們都是說Merry Christmas，那Happy Christmas可不可以呢？其實從語法到用法，Happy Christmas都是沒有問題的。

　　事實上，Happy Christmas更多是英國部分民眾的首選。而其中的代表人物，就是已逝的英女王伊麗莎白二世。在之前每年英國女王的圣誕演講中都可以聽到女王給英國人民的祝福就是“Happy Christmas“。

　　英國人喜歡happy而非merry，據說是因為不喜歡merry所隱含的酗酒作樂之意，merry這個單詞的原意是“jovial, and outgoing，probably mildly intoxicated”，就是天性活潑的，可能還有些醉了的意思。因此保守的英國人會傾向于用Happy Christmas。

　　那Merry Christmas又是怎么流行起來的呢？追根溯源，Merry Christmas最早現身是在1565年的一份手稿上。據說是一個海軍元帥寫在信里的祝福：

　　And thus I comytt you to god, who send you a mery Christmas & many.

　　我于是送你到主面前，

　　愿主賜你圣誕快樂，萬事如意。

　　直到1834年狄更斯的小說A Christmas Carol《圣誕頌歌》（又譯為《小氣財神》）用到了這句話，隨著印刷工業的發展和這本小說的流行，“Merry Christmas”的說法才真正廣泛流行起來。

　　在使用“Merry Christmas”時也有禁忌哦！

　　Christmas是慶祝耶穌誕生，但是人家不信耶穌怎么辦？比如猶太教的人。所以在西方，只有非宗教信仰者和天主教會樂意聽到Merry Christmas。因此為了避免這種宗教性的爭議，商務郵件一般都用Happy Holidays這種中性的語句代替。
