　　To be a person with a very limited outlook

　　once upon a time, a sea turtle came upon a frog that lived in an old abandoned well. Upon seeing the turtle, the frog boasted:"Look, I am happy and completely at ease here. Why dont you come down and join me?" The turtle tried, but the well was too small, so the turtle didnt fit through the opening. Then, he said to the frog:"Have you ever seen the ocean? It is quite vast, and you would truly be happy if you lived there." Upon hearing this, the frog was so surprised he just stood there speechless. Nowadays, this idiom is usually used to describe people who are not only short-sighted, but also complacent.

　　Example

　　The frog at the bottom of the well is always blind to the vastness of the sky. "Ambitious men aim for the stars." So let us lift our voices as we go forward on our long voyage, with a tall beacon lighting the way.

　　Have you not heard of the frog that lived in a shallow well?

　　譯：你沒聽說過住在淺井里的青蛙嗎？

　　It said to a turtle that lived in the East Sea, "I am so happy! When I go out, I jump about on the railing beside the mouth of the well.

　　譯：它對一只生活在東海的海龜說：“我太高興了！我出去的時候，在井口旁邊的欄桿上跳來跳去。

　　When I come home, I rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. If I jump into the water, it comes up to my armpits and holds up my cheeks.

　　譯：當(dāng)我回家的時候，我躺在破井壁上的洞里。如果我跳進(jìn)水里，它會爬到我的腋下，托起我的臉頰。

　　If I walk in the mud, it covers up my feet. I look around at the wriggly worms, crabs and tadpoles, and none of them can compare with me.

　　譯：如果我在泥濘中行走，它會蓋住我的腳。我環(huán)顧四周，看那些蠕動的蟲子、螃蟹和蝌蚪，它們都比不上我。

　　Moreover, I am lord of this trough of water and I stand up tall in this shallow well. My happiness is full. My dear sir, why dont you come often and look around my place?"

　　譯：此外，我是這槽水的主人，我在這淺井里挺立。我的幸福是充實(shí)的。親愛的先生，你為什么不經(jīng)常來我家看看呢？”

　　Before the turtle from the East Sea could get its left foot in the well, it’s right knee got stuck. It hesitated and retreated. The turtle told the frog about the East Sea.

　　譯：東海的烏龜還沒來得及把左腳伸進(jìn)井里，它的右膝就卡住了。它猶豫了一下，退卻了。烏龜把東海的事告訴青蛙。

　　"Even a distance of a thousand li cannot give you an idea of the seas width; even a height of a thousand ren cannot give you an idea of its depth.

　　譯：“即使千里之遙，也不能讓你知道海的寬度；即使千人之高，也不能讓你知道海的深度。

　　In the time of King Yu of the Xia dynasty, there were floods nine years out of ten, but the waters in the sea did not increase.

　　譯：夏禹時，十年有九年一遇洪水，但海中水量沒有增加。

　　ln the time of King Tang of the Shang dynasty there were droughts seven years out of eight, but the waters in the sea did not decrease.

　　譯：商代唐王八年有七年旱災(zāi)，但海中水量沒有減少。

　　The sea does not change along with the passage of time and its level does not rise or fall according to the amount of rain that falls. The greatest happiness is to live in the East Sea."

　　譯：海不隨時間的推移而變化，海平面也不隨降雨的多少而上升或下降。生活在東海是最大的幸福。”

　　After listening to these words, the frog of the shallow well was shocked into realization of his own insignificance and became very ill at ease.

　　譯：聽了這些話后，那淺井的青蛙震驚地意識到自己的渺小，變得非常不自在。

　　The Frog in the Shallow Well

　　Have you not heard of the frog that lived in a shallow well? It said to a turtle(海龜) that lived in the East Sea, "I am so happy! When I go out, I jump about on the railing(欄桿，扶手) beside the mouth of the well. When I come home, I rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. If I jump into the water, it comes up to my armpits(腋窩) and holds up my cheeks. If I walk in the mud, it covers up my feet. 　　一口廢井里住著一只青蛙。有一天，青蛙在井邊碰上了一只從海里來的大龜。 青蛙就對海龜夸口說： “你看，我住在這里多快樂!有時高興了，就在井欄邊跳躍一陣;疲倦了，就回到井里，睡在磚洞邊一回。或者只留出頭和嘴巴，安安靜靜地把全身泡在水里：或者在軟綿綿的泥漿里散一回步，也很舒適。看看那些蝦，誰也比不上我。而且，我是這個井里的主人，在這井里極自由自在，你為什么不常到井里來游賞呢!”

　　它連忙后退了兩步，把大海的情形告訴青蛙說： “你看過海嗎?海的廣大，哪止千里;海的深度，哪只千來丈。古時候，十年有九年大水，海里的水，并不漲了多少;后來，八年里有七年大早，海里的水，也不見得淺了多少。可見大海是不受旱澇影響的。住在那樣的大海里，才是真的快樂呢!”

　　After listening to these words, the frog of the shallow well was shocked into realization of his own insignificance and became very ill at ease(不安的，拘束的).
