Take a second chanceYOU'VE got a good voice，and your dream is to make a career for yourself in the music world.Suddenly，you're offered a record deal.So what do you do?Obviously，you jump at any opportunity for stardom，right?
Kelly Clarkson actually let her first chance pass her by.She was 18，and she had just moved to Los Angeles from Texas to pursue her entertainment dream.“[The record company ] told me that if I lost 20 pounds (9 kilograms)that they would sign me，”Clarkson told NPR.
It_seemed_like_saying_“no”_was_a_bad_choice.Although Clarkson later landed some minor roles(小角色)in some TV series, her opportunities were rare.Eventually she returned to Texas and became a waitress in a bar.
But thankfully，she got another chance at fame.In 2002, Clarkson decided to try her luck on the first season of TV talent show American Idol.Things went well—she went on to win the contest.However，when Clarkson first auditioned (試鏡)，she never expected that it would enable her to relive her dream.“I had no idea what the show was，”Clarkson said.“I just auditioned for this thing that said they'd pay you...I went into it thinking it might pay my electric bill.”
That's how Clarkson's career started from “ a happenstance(偶然事件)”，as she put it.Critics(評(píng)論家)gave various reasons why she wouldn't stay on top.She wasn't stylish enough;she wasn't slim(苗條的)enough，and so on.But Kelly Clarkson,31，has proven them all wrong by producing nonstop，worldwide hits.On Oct 29，Clarkson released④ her sixth CD，a Christmas album called Wrapped in Red, which NBC says it likely to “become a new holiday classic⑤”.
How has she stayed strong all these years?“I had to grow a thick skin from the age of 6，”Clarkson revealed to The New York Times, referring to a childhood defined by her parents' divorce⑥ and financial(經(jīng)濟(jì)上的)hardship.
