五一國際勞動節(jié)簡稱五一節(jié)，在每年的5月1日。它是全世界勞動人民的共同節(jié)日。此節(jié)源于美國芝加哥的工人大罷工。1886年5月1日，芝加哥的20 多萬工人為爭取實行八小時工作制而舉行大罷工，經(jīng)過艱苦的流血斗爭，終于獲得了勝利。為紀念這次工人運動，1889年7月14日，由各國馬克思主義者召集的社會主義者代表大會，在法國巴黎隆重開幕，與會代表一致同意：把5月1日定為國際無產(chǎn)階級的共同節(jié)日。

中國人民慶祝勞動節(jié)的活動可追溯至1918 年。是年，一些革命的知識分子在上海、蘇州等地向群眾散發(fā)介紹“五一”的傳單。1920年5月1日，北京、上海、廣州等城市的工人群眾走上街頭舉行了聲勢浩大的游行、集會。新中國成立后，我國于1949 年12月將“五一”定為法定的勞動節(jié)。

每逢9月的勞動節(jié)，美國人可以放假一天，全美各地的民眾一般都會舉行游行、集會等各種慶祝活動，以示對勞工的尊重。在一些州，人們在游行之后還要舉辦野餐會，熱鬧地吃喝、唱歌、跳舞。入夜，有的地方還會放焰火。
